Ship Breaker

I picked this particular novel over others because just from reading what the book is about I can see an interesting plot forming from Nailer working a job and just hoping to see tomorrow. I also like the character choice within this book. It almost make it feel like it’s him against the world. Like the entire world doesn’t want him to succeed in life but time after time he fights through it. I could see a connection between me and Nailer of how even through obstacles he will make choices that will only help him succeed more in life. I would recommend this book to someone who has obstacles that they need to fight against meaning people who don’t like them because you can really connect to Nailer of how there are only a couple of people who help him throughout the journey. I would also recommend this to people that have a very close friend and their parents are more helpful and caring then yours because you can tell that it’s hard for him to not have a mom that is loving for him and caring for him so he has to turn to his friends mom because his dad is an alcoholic and a drug abuser. But even if someone isn’t going through obstacles I still recommend this book to anyone that needs something to read because of the escalating plot that this book has.

Ship Breaker

I think chapters 1-5 are great to “hook” the reader to the book. At least this is what I found very hooking as a reader. Chapter one is as usual as any book. You learn about Nailer who is the main character. You learn that he scavenges copper wires on old oil tankers just hoping to live till tomorrow. Then at the end of the second chapter Nailer falls into a pit of oil where Sloth finds him. He asks for help but she doesn’t want to help him because she wants the oil for herself. But luckily Nailer is smart and thinks that there might be a door in the bottom of the pit. After many times he finally breaks through and spills into the ocean. When he comes up there is blood from his shoulder. So he goes to his friend’s mom so it doesn’t get infected. After that his crew shows up with booze to celebrate Nailer’s find. But when Nailer gets home his dad asked what happened. He told him but also told him about how he lost his father’s mask. His father was very mad and Nailer knew he was about to get a beating. So he offered the booze to his alcoholic father and he got out of that beating. This is where you start to see how bad his father is.

Most of the Major Characters have a want/desire in the book. For Nailer, it’s to save Nita from his Dad so he can get enough money to stop working at his hard job. Richard wants to capture Nita and take her to her uncle so Richard to get Money and Drugs. All Richard needs to live. Nita wants to get away from her uncle so she won’t have to sell drugs for a living. Richard and Nailer follow a theme throughout the book and that’s Greed. Nailer has a lot of Greed because he hates working as an oil tanker. So he wants to help Nita so he can get money and not have to work as an oil tanker anymore. While Richard has a lot of Greed to get drugs and Money. Richard has so much greed he would rather kill or leave his son for money and drugs. You know there is something wrong with you if you would rather kill your son then give up Nita and all the money and drugs he can get and all of these decisions are based off greed. My book has a lot of dialogue and has so one sentence paragraph and some paragraphs that are longer. The book is given in a plot diagram. Where there is an exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.

Ship Breaker

 The Major characters of Ship Breaker is Nailer (of course), Richard, Sadna, Pima, Tool, and Nita. Nailer is the protagonist of the Book. Richard is the antagonist of the book and is Nailer’s Dad. Pima is Nailer’s close friend that leads the “Light Crew.” Sadna is Pima’s mom and cares for Nailer. Tool is a “Half-man” that goes to New Orleans with Nailer and used to work for Richard.  Nita is the girl Paolo saved from the ship. The setting is on The Gulf Coast. The conflict of this book is between Richard and Nailer in their fight for Nita. Nailer wants to save Nita and Richard wants to give Nita to her Uncle so he can use her for his illegal business. So Nailer has to chase after Richard to try and get Nita back. So the “Dauntless” (the ship Nailer is on) chases after the Ray and Pole Star. After a while they outsmart the boats and they board the ships to find Nita. But while Nailer is trying to find Nita he encounters his Dad. Where a fight ensues and Nailer wins. He then saves Nita and Nita won’t have to work for her Uncles Illegal business.
